Camping is one of our oldest and most-loved pastimes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring along a touch of modern life to improve the experience. A towable RV can be just the thing you need, but with the number of types, shapes, and sizes on the market, getting the right one can be a chore. We here at C&R Auto & Trailer Sales want to help you get to the fun part as soon as possible, so we’ve put together a brief guide to the types of towable RVs below. Small Trailers
Towable RVs are the most diverse group of campers out there, and the smallest are known as pop-up campers or camper trailers. They can be as simple as foldable tents on wheels to provide an easy setup and a flat dry surface, but some models include a bathroom and kitchen set up to keep you comfortable.
A step up is the teardrop trailer, named for the tapered shape that concludes in a point at the trailer’s rear. These provide a climate-controlled bedroom and bathroom and may sometimes include a small kitchenette. Other models have an outdoor kitchen hidden in a compartment at the rear.
Both of these types of trailers can be towed by most consumer vehicles.
Mid-Size Trailers
Stand-up trailers are another step up and are shaped similarly to teardrop trailers. However, they’re significantly larger, providing a more spacious interior with a cooking or living space. The exact amenities depend on the make and model, and the larger size requires a more powerful tow vehicle. Even so, these trailers are still relatively lightweight and can be pulled by SUV-style vehicles.
Larger Trailers
The next two types of trailers are fifth wheels and travel trailers, and their sizes overlap depending on the manufacturer and model. Fifth wheels are unique, however, in their gooseneck-style hitch which connects to the bed of a pickup truck rather than the bumper. This places the trailer’s weight on the rear axle rather than the bumper, providing a more secure connection, and the overlap allows for a tighter turn radius, though it limits the types of tow vehicles you can use.
Travel trailers have a more traditional bumper-pull hitch, and both they and fifth wheels usually include a private bedroom, 1-2 bathrooms, a full kitchen, a living space, and some outdoor amenities.
Another unique large towable RV is the toy hauler. These also have a private bedroom and 1-2 bathrooms, but the living and cooking space is more limited to make room for a large cargo bay at the rear. This bay is designed to allow you to bring powersports vehicles along on the ride, though it can be redecorated however you choose. All three of these trailers require a power vehicle, likely a pickup.
